Success Stories

The Windsor Regional Employment Network is thrilled to celebrate the success of our clients and the service providers they work with. Hear from Gemma – a client who found her dream job in Radio, Michael – who found quick success in tech, and Tom – who is an adored member of his new team!

A UHC client faced challenges including age-related barriers and a past job termination which affected their confidence and motivation. With support from their caseworker, the client received a tailored list of job search resources, supports for safety boots, and appropriate workwear to help them re-enter the workforce.

They also appreciated the ongoing support. “Checking up on how someone is making out and assisting them with everything they might be allowed to be entitled to is certainly helpful and makes a person feel like they’re not just a tick on a box or a number in the system.” The client continues to be happily employed in a full-time role in building maintenance.

Abdi is a mature male with extensive experience across various manufacturing sectors. When he accessed UHC’s Integrated Employment Services (IES) programming in early 2024, he was navigating a period marked by multiple personal challenges. A recent permanent layoff had triggered a series of setbacks, including a family breakdown and considerable emotional stress. The loss of employment at this stage in his life deeply affected his sense of stability and self-worth.

Through the IES program’s specialized and collaborative team approach, Abdi was connected to key community resources that played a vital role in stabilizing his situation. He received individualized coaching through one-on-one sessions that focused on resume development, job search strategies, and targeted employer outreach. Program staff also advocated on his behalf to ensure that his unique circumstances were acknowledged and addressed throughout his journey.
Following a prolonged absence from the labour market, Abdi successfully re-entered the manufacturing sector with an employer able to accommodate his current needs.

His new role includes steady shift work aligned with public transit access, a critical factor in supporting his efforts to maintain employment while continuing to manage personal challenges. This placement not only restored structure to his daily life but also provided a sense of direction and renewed motivation.

Abdi’s return to meaningful employment has had a profound impact on his overall well-being, greatly improving his sense of purpose and confidence. For him, returning to work means more than earning a pay cheque, it represents the reclamation of dignity, identity, and hope for the future. His experience highlights the resilience of mature workers and the transformative effect that inclusive and supportive employment programming can have.

Throughout his journey, Abdi has demonstrated significant personal growth. He has overcome notable legal and emotional hurdles and has shown strong commitment to recovery and reintegration. His story reflects perseverance, accountability, and a genuine desire to build a stable and positive future, making his progress a powerful example of what can be achieved through tailored support and individual determination.

In September 2024, Saber arrived in Canada as a permanent resident, filled with ambition and the hope of establishing a meaningful career in his new home. With a master’s degree in economics and previous experience in the banking sector, he immediately began his job search in the hopes of continuing his professional journey in the same field. However, Saber quickly discovered that securing employment in Canada, particularly in his area of expertise, was more challenging than anticipated.

Unaware of the importance of Canadian work experience, Saber faced repeated roadblocks and limited responses to his applications. In November 2024, Saber turned to the YMCA of Southwestern Ontario’s Integrated Employment Services program for support. From day one, his determination and drive were evident.

Together with his employment caseworker, Saber began developing a tailored resume and cover letter, while also attending workshops and trainings to build new skills relevant to the Canadian workforce. Despite months of not receiving interview calls, he remained committed, punctual, and optimistic, never missing an appointment and always eager to learn.

The YMCA team recognized his potential and dedication. In May 2025, Saber began working one-on-one with a Job Developer who continued to guide and support him through the next phase of his journey. This partnership created a nurturing and empowering environment that kept him focused and motivated even when the job market remained competitive. Their perseverance paid off.
By July 2025, Saber had successfully landed three interviews and was able to secure full time permanent employment with NextStar Energy as a Production Technician. This opportunity marked a turning point in his journey, one filled with relief, pride, and renewed sense of purpose. With his new role, he is now able to cover the costs of his living expenses and build a stable and fulfilling life in Canada.

Saber’s story is a testament to the power of resilience, community support, and the impact of integrated employment services. We are proud to have been part of the Saber’s journey and look forward to seeing his continued growth and contributions in Canada.
Client’s Testimony:

When Tejiri Udi first enrolled in our program, he encountered a common yet significant barrier to employment faced by many newcomers—lack of Canadian work experience. Although Tejiri brought a wealth of international experience and a strong desire to contribute to the workforce, he was unsure how to adapt his existing skills to align with Canadian employment standards. Despite these initial challenges, Tejiri demonstrated exceptional motivation and a clear determination to achieve his professional goals. What he needed was the right support and direction to navigate the Canadian job market with confidence.

Tejiri was referred to the Customer Service Training Program delivered by the Multicultural Council of Windsor and Essex County (MCC). Through this initiative, he participated in targeted training sessions focused on Canadian workplace culture, customer service best practices, effective communication, and job readiness strategies. This comprehensive support helped him build a strong foundation and positioned him for success in a highly competitive employment landscape.

Upon completion of the training, Tejiri began working closely with Caroline Nader, one of our dedicated Job Developers, to further enhance his employability. Together, they refined his resume, practiced interview techniques, and explored job opportunities that aligned with his skills and aspirations.

As a result of his commitment and the guidance provided through the MCC, Tejiri secured his first Canadian job as a Customer Experience Associate with TD Bank. This achievement represents more than just a job—it marks a significant milestone in his journey toward long-term career success in Canada.

This new beginning has not only granted Tejiri financial independence, but it has also strengthened his self-confidence and opened new doors for career growth within the Canadian financial sector. His story is a testament to the impact of tailored support, newcomer resilience, and the power of community-based employment programs.

Inspired by his own journey, Tejiri has also expressed a desire to give back. He hopes to support others going through the program—whether by serving as a mentor, connecting with new clients, or offering guidance and encouragement just as he once received.

For over 14 years, Maria built a diverse career spanning hospitality, customer service, and education. In 2017, she transitioned into the aviation industry, serving as a flight attendant—a role she took great pride in. However, in the wake of the global pandemic, the demands of the position became increasingly unsustainable. Recognizing the need for a more fulfilling and forward-thinking path, Maria made the bold decision to resign and pursue a career aligned with her core values: innovation, continuous growth, inclusion, and operational excellence.

Maria explored a range of strategies in her job search before choosing to engage creatively and collaboratively with various employment agencies. While navigating rejection was challenging, she came to view each setback not as a failure, but as a redirection—an opportunity to refine her approach and move closer to the right fit.

Together with her employment consultant, Maria identified courses that aligned with her passions and strengths. This strategic approach provided greater clarity and direction, while also fostering a strong sense of accountability throughout her journey.
